To prescribe medications containing controlled substances, an initial appointment with a psychiatric practitioner for a thorough intake and mental health assessment, is Federally mandated. However, some states require this visit to be in-person, and some other states allow the initial visit to be virtual.
If in-person initial visit is not required by the state where the patient resides, our psychiatric practitioners will write the prescription as part of our service psychiatric medication management.
If the state requires an in-person visit, our psychiatric practitioner will write a referral for the patient that they can then take to their doctor or primary care physician. This referral will advise the doctor that the patient is in psychiatric treatment, that a mental health assessment has already been performed by a licensed psychiatric practitioner and that the prescription is medically necessary. This will facilitate the doctor writing the prescription.
